At the western end of the lake, the of Keszthely used to be
owned lock, stock and barrel of one family - the Festetics.
The 101-room Festetics Palace is one of Hungary's important
Baroque monuments. Count György Festetics founded Europe's first
agricultural school, now Keszthely's University of Agricultural
Sciences, in 1797. He also amazed townspeople by building Phoenix,
the biggest ship on Balaton till then, a three-master powered
with help from 24 oarsmen
