Esztergom is a cathedral city and medieval capital of all Hungary. In its region the Danube itself is an international frontier, that's Slovakia on the opposite bank.
The ruins of a bridge which linked the two countries until WW II make a melancholy sight from the heights of Castle Hill.
One of the earliest Magyar rulers, Prince Géza chose Esztergom as his base. In a grand gesture towards the Holy Roman Empire, the prince announced that his people would join the western stream of Christianity. This set scene for Esztergom's role as the ecclesiastical and royal capital of the young nation.
